Book Club meets every other week via Zoom. At present membership is full. If you wish your name to be put on a waiting list please contact the coordinator through Contact Us and we will get back to you.
EMWC Outreach Opportunity
Each year a group, or activity, which supports women and/or children, is chosen for sponsorship. Participation by any of the members of EMWC is voluntary, and all contributions are “in kind”, i.e. in the form of goods.
Past projects have included Basically Babies, Suit Yourself, Win House, the Stollery Fun Run, Terra, the Snack program at McNally High School and the Family Pantry Society of Alberta! EMWC Executive will be choosing this year’s charity later this year.
Historical Book Club
During Covid-19 we are keeping in touch via Zoom but hope to return soon to our regular meetings at a central venue the fourth Wednesday evening of every month. We enjoy lively exchanges about historical non-fiction and fiction books. At present our group is full but we would certainly assist anyone interested in starting a new group.
Curling carries on during Covid-19. The Curling Club meets Thursday mornings for recreation and fun at a local curling club. This is a great group that welcomes experienced curlers as well as newcomers. This club formed the foundation for the EMWC 60 years ago. Registration is mid-September and the league starts mid-October.
Habitat for Humanity
In past years Edmonton Medical Women have volunteered with Habitat Edmonton helping in the construction of homes for less fortunate working families. We have also worked in their Prefab and the UpCycling shops. With the present Covid-19 conditions the PreFab and Up Cycle shops are not open for volunteers
Habitat continues to have their ReStores open and are always looking for volunteers . The ReStores accept donations of new and gently used items like appliances, furniture and building materials. These are sold to the general public at reduced rates and proceeds help Habitat provide affordable house for families in our community.
Volunteers are the ReStore might be: helping customers, stocking shelves, loading/unloading products from the donation truck, organizing items, tidying as well as other tasks.
In the past, EMWC was given a plaque in recognition of the volunteer commitment shown by members of the club.
This group comprises all levels of golfers, beginners to experienced. They meet weekly at various golf courses for 9 holes, starting in May. It is a drop-in format, so you are not obligated to commit to play every week. Everyone is welcome.
Happy Hookers/ Stitch and Chat Club
If you enjoy needlework, knitting, crocheting, and/or hand quilting, and would like to get together with others who enjoy needle crafts this is your opportunity. Because of Covid-19, the group has postponed their meetings but will re-evaluate as the conditions improve. The group has been meeting on Monday afternoons in members’ homes.
The goals of this longstanding interest group are to educate members, invest regularly, and enjoy each other’s friendship. Invited guest speakers educate and inform on investment topics, and the group works together to make informed investments. It requires a relatively long term commitment of its members due to the nature of the pooling of funds for investments in the market.
The group meets monthly in members’ homes, and is presently full. However, if you are interested, please put forward your name to the EMWC email address. Any openings will be communicated by email, or alternatively another group could be started if enough members were interested.
If you enjoy brisk walking, fresh air & camaraderie, this group is for you! Enjoy different areas of the River Valley each week. The group walks from mid-September to mid-June, weather permitting, every Wednesday from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Cut off temperature is -20 C, and also depends on the wind chill. New members are always welcome, all you need is walking shoes and some enthusiasm! Since the onset of Covid-19, we ask members to please bring a mask for instances where we can’t distance such as the meeting places. On the trail, it will be at each person’s discretion. A number of the photos below were taken before Covid-19.
Social Media Working Group
One aspect of advertising our club to potential members is accessing social media (e.g. Facebook, website). We would like to have a group of members who are interested in maintaining social media applications. We have a Facebook coordinator. If interested in joining with our social media venture, please contact the executive below.
Unable to attend an interest group but would like to be involved with EMWC? Consider the executive. Meetings are every two to three months, alternating day and evening times. It’s a friendly, fun group and opportunities abound. If interested, please speak to an executive member or contact us below.
A member recently inquired about bridge. If you would like to be involved in a bridge group, please contact us below
Have an idea for an interest group?
There is always room for more interest groups. If you have an idea, please put it forward. We will send out an email to the membership to solicit interest. Once you have a small group, decide where you want to meet, how often and pick a date and time. Coordinating typically involves emailing group members prior to each meeting.
